British Values

The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. The British Values have been separated into four headings, at Tiny Hands we use the below headings and imbed these into our daily routine.

Democracy

At Tiny Hands the child’s voice is paramount to us. Children use free flow in order to give them the opportunity to make choices daily and we use each child’s interests to support the provision within the setting. We encourage turn taking and actively promote learning about our feelings. We teach Makaton alongside our feelings so children have the opportunity to express themselves. We give choices throughout the session for snack, stories, games and songs. We encourage children to listen to their friends.

Rule of Law

We aim to provide an environment where children can develop an understanding of the rules and boundaries of the setting. Staff model positive behaviour and work together to provide an environment where children can thrive with consistency from adults. We use basic rules to encourage children to begin to understand right from wrong.

We ring the bell at the end of session and the children listen to a “tidy up song” whilst tidying and this forms part of their daily routine. Staff model tidying up and encourage children to put toys away and we speak about looking after our resources.

Individual Liberty

We understand the importance of children developing a positive sense of them self. We encourage children to increase their confidence in their own abilities by allowing children to take their own risks. We use cable reels, tyres, pieces of wood and ladders to create obstacle courses to allow children to gain the confidence to climb and balance. We encourage children to jump from the reels, giving them the opportunity to problem solve their landing. We encourage independence of washing and drying their own hands and recognising their name at snack. Children are given children’s knifes to cut up their own snack.

We work closely with the neighbouring schools to allow for a smooth transition for each child’s next chapter on their journey to School.

Mutual Respect & Tolerance

At Tiny Hands we ensure our setting is fully inclusive in meeting all children’s needs. We share books that show and respect diversity. We listen to different cultural music and incorporate different celebrations from around the world into our setting.

We use mirrors around the room with feelings attached so children can begin to recognise how they’re feeling and begin to understand similarities and differences between themselves and others.

We are a charity run preschool owned by the GFCA. We are based at the back of the community centre in the old youth wing. We care for children aged 2-5 years term time only.
